He was a distinguished scholar and eminent authority on medieval Icelandic literature and Old Norse and Head of the Department of Scandinavian Studies at University College London, who was born and brought up in Swanage, learnt to ring at St Mary's and continued to be a keen bell ringer throughout his life.
